These tiny antelope species are threatened by the destruction of their natural habitat - indigenous forest. Previously, their biology and habitat requirements were poorly known. However, recent studies carried out in the wild and among the captive groups at De Wildt have revealed much about these interesting little animals. The final aim is to introduce these captive born antelope into suitable natural areas. Since 16 sunis first arrived at De Wildt in 1985, approximately 53 young have been born in the sheltered bomas. This breeding programme has been so successful that a breeding nucleus of these shy animals was given to the Kruger National Park. This programme has been discontinued due to lack of natural habitat where they could be released. |
